Sunlight and Orientation: What a Daylight Score Actually Means

How solar orientation is modelled, and what a daylight score can and cannot tell you.

Daylight is easy to overlook when you tour a home once, at one time of day. SunPath IQ uses NOAA solar-position formulas to model the sun's arc for any latitude and longitude on any day of the year, then estimates how much direct light the primary living spaces receive.

Because the sun sits lower in winter, a south-facing rear yard receives more midday winter sun than a north-facing one on the same block. How much more depends on the roofline, trees, and neighbouring structures, which is why the score is a modelled estimate and not a measurement, and not a statement about resale value.
